Celle and Varazze are just two of the ancient marine villages , with their narrow streets and colourful houses, well worth visiting. Nearby Noli is an ancient fortress town with high towers and a surrounding wall that hides ancient porticoes and alleyways. There is a beach where local fishermen still sell fresh fish early in the morning.
The centre of Albenga is also well worth a visit. It is a medieval town, home to the Cathedral of San Michele, the Baptistry with its Byzantine mosaics, the small Piazza dei Leoni and the local family towers.
Art lovers should not pass up the chance to visit Albisola, where 1400, the traditional ceramics of the same name are produced and have been part of the local tradition since 1400. The inland area around Savona is home to Altare, a town that is traditionally famous for its artistic glassware.
Visitors, wandering through the “carruggi” typical ligurian streets or along the shoreline can enjoy the scents of Liguria: the focaccia bread, the pesto sauce, the fresh fish and basil and taste the local white and red wines such as Pigato and Fermentino and Rossese.
The climate on the Riviera is excellent all year round especially between September and June , when the weather is mild and the beaches are less crowded. In fact Liguria is a popular winter holiday destination thanks to its incredibly mild winter temperatures, reduced thermal range, high insulation and low rainfall. |
