This palace was built according to the wish of Andrea Doria. It stretches from the hills as far as the sea and even has its own landing stage. The façade boasts an elegant entrance way leading into the palace. The apartments of Andrea Doria and the Caduta dei Giganti great room are well worth a visit. The gallery houses a series of magnificent tapestries dedicated to the battle of Lepanto. Neptune’s fountain and Tritan’s fountain are at the very centre of the park.
This building, the great transatlantic shipping terminal, was built to meet the needs of the increase in traffic via sea. It was restored to full use at the beginning of the 20th century. The most interesting attraction inside this great building is the Sala Dogana or customs room that is decorated with beautiful “ tourist” frescos. Behind the terminal you can visit the Ponte dei Mille, once the departure point for the great liners full of immigrants headed towards America.
Via Pré is famous for its market stalls, shops and workshops. The origin of its name could lead one to imagine an area that is not very urbanized, however there are some interesting Medieval residences.
Porta dei vacca is on the west side of the towns defensive walls. It leads into Via del campo, a residential area and home to some of the elegant houses of the local nobility. This street was made famous in a song by the Italian singer songwriter Fabrizio De André
The Portico in Via Sottoripa was built in 1133 by the Town Council as a commercial area for shops and stalls. Today that tradition is maintained and it is a thriving shopping centre. The Piazza Caricamento, that was once the train station is a now pedestrianised area thanks to construction of the underpass that leads from Via Gramsci to Piazza Cavour.
Once the Customs building this structure is today the headquarters of the Port Authorities. Preserved carefully within its walls is the Salone delle Compere great room that exhibits precious statues and paintings.
The recovery of the Old port was planned by Renzo Piano; all the initial concerns for the future of the area, raised by the failure of the Columbus exhibition held in 1992, were unfounded thanks to the Aquarium. Today it is the main attraction in Genoa and is the third most visited exhibition area in Italy. The Aquarium has 6000 examples of 600 marine species, 61 tanks and covers almost 10000m² of exhibition space. It is one of the biggest exhibition areas of this kind in Europe. The offshore area in front of the Aquarium is home to the large glass and metal bubble, designed by Renzo Piano, and host to a selection of tropical plants. Also situated nearby is the Grande Nave Blu, where visitors can admire lots of species of fish, crustaceans and a large collection of reptiles and plants from Madagascar.
The neighbouring area is full of restaurants and shops and made even more attractive by the Bigo, a metal structure, emulating a ship’s crane, or in the local dialect “Bigo”, that supports an elevator ride providing panoramic views of the city.
The buildings in and around the Porto Franco and the Millo quarters are home to offices and shops as wells as the National Antarctic Museum. This unique museum illustrates the research activity taking place in the Baia Terra Nova,the only Italian research centre on the Antarctic continent. Inside the nearby Magazzini del Cotone there is a modern multi screen cinema complex. The third exhibition point in the Old Portis called the Città dei bambini: the Padiglione del Mare e della Navigazione exhibition hall contains ancient artefacts and scenes evoking the past life and times of this marine town.
Porta del Molo also known as Porta Siberia was an important stronghold of the Port area and where the customs duties were one collected. Via del Molo leads off the Porta del Molo and accommodates all the local artisan activities connected to the port’s shipyards.
Genoa is the most important port in Italy and, together with Marseille, the biggest in the Mediterranean. There is a boat trip that leaves from the Aquarium and takes visitors around the port.
