Thanks to recent pedestrianisation the Via S. Lorenzo it is now one of the most beautiful streets in the city and deserves special attention. It is also home to The Cathedral of S. Lorenzo. A gothic building with a black and white façade typical of this area of the Tyrrhenian. The Museum that holds the treasure of S Lorenzo is accessible from inside the Cathedral. Many of the city’s political and religious buildings can be found in Via Tommaso Reggio, to the left of the cathedral, amongst these is the Palazzetto Criminale that preserves numerous precious documents.
The buildings in Piazza S Matteo reflect the power and wealth of the Doria Family, starting with the Palazzo di Andrea Doria and subsequently the Palazzo di Lamba Doria. The left side of the Piazza is dominated by the palaces of Domenicaccio Doria and Branca Doria with the black and white facades typical of the second half of the 13th century.
This palace was restored for the Columbus exhibition in 1992. It is a monument of immense beauty and importance.
Continuing towards S.Maria di Castello the itinerary includes: the Porta di S. Andrea or Soprana, the city gate that marks the boundry between the historical old town and the modern town and the churches of S.Donato and S. Agostino. The church of S. Agostino was deconsecrated over 200 years ago and today hosts the plays and shows of the Teatro della Tosse theatre situated opposite. The itinerary also covers Piazza Sarzano site of the Faculty of Architecture built on the ruins of the 17th Century monastery of S.Silvestro.
