Markets, flea markets and stalls have an irresistible appeal, and Genoa offers many opportunities to be lured by their siren call.
Let's start with the most everyday, familiar form, the regular city markets (link to list): every neighbourhood in the city hosts markets, either indoors or outdoors and often on a daily basis, offering visitors the chance to enjoy the colours and smells of fruit, vegetables, bread and focaccia. The best known is the large Mercato Orientale on Via XX Settembre, with a host of stalls selling exotic fruit, fresh fish and spices.
All the "historic" markets date to the late 1800s and early 1900s: in addition to the Mercato Orientale, worth mentioning are the Carmine, Dinegro and Piazza Statuto markets, as well as the market of Via Ferro in Sestri Ponente. The Carmine market, the market of Via Ferro in Sestri, and the small market in Piazza Sarzano have recently been restored.
In the streets and squares of the city's various neighbourhoods, you'll find markets selling a variety of goods – including clothing, accessories and homeware - on a weekly or twice-weekly basis, offering the chance to take a stroll on the hunt for bargains. Arenzano market take placeevery Fridaymorning, in Voltrievery Tuesday morning.
